What are dental crowns?

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is placed over a damaged or decayed tooth to restore its size, shape, and strength. It is typically made of materials such as porcelain, ceramic, or metal alloys, and is cemented onto the remaining tooth structure to provide a protective covering. Dental crowns can also be used for cosmetic purposes to improve the appearance of teeth that are discolored or misshapen. They are a common dental solution that can help prevent further damage to the tooth, while also improving the overall function and appearance of the mouth.

What to expect at your appointment

  • We Prepare the Tooth

    After numbing your tooth, your dentist will remove and repair any damaged portion of your tooth, and shape your tooth for a crown impression. A digital scan or dental putty will be used to take the crown impression, which will be sent to the lab to fabricate your crown.

  • Temporary Crown is Applied

    Your provider will make a temporary crown for you to wear while your permanent crown is being made in the lab. This will protect your tooth while awaiting the arrival of your new crown.

  • Final Crown is Applied

    At your next appointment, your provider will remove your temporary crown and try on your new crown to check its custom fit into your mouth. An x-ray is typically taken, the shade is checked, and once approved your final crown is cemented into place and ready to go!

DENTAL CROWN

  • The most commonly used type of crown is made out of ceramic, which is an aesthetic tooth colored material. There are different types of ceramic crowns for different dental situations, but all look and appear like a natural tooth.

  • A gold crown is actually a crown made of multiple metals, gold being one of them. They are typically more expensive than a tooth colored crown, but are great restorations as well.
